[ARCHIVED] City of Papillion to Dedicate Purple Heart Memorial

Veterans Day - Papillion

The City of Papillion, with help from Papillion American Legion Post 32, will dedicate a new Purple Heart Memorial during a Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11, 11 a.m. at Veteran Park, located at the corner of Halleck and Monroe Streets in Papillion. The public is invited to attend.

The Purple Heart Memorial was recently added to the park to honor those both living and deceased who have received the distinguished recognition for being wounded in combat.

“This Purple Heart Memorial is a thank you to those in our community who have shed blood in combat defending our nation’s freedom and way of life,” said Mayor David Black. “We invite any and all Purple Heart veterans in our area to join us and be honored during this ceremony.”

During the ceremony, Mayor David Black will also read a proclamation highlighting Papillion’s recent recognition as a Purple Heart City and its addition to the Purple Heart Trail.

Established in 1992 by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Purple Heart Trail is a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and other monuments that give tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal. Papillion’s Veterans Park as well as Omaha National Cemetery and the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Memorial currently under construction have all been added to the Purple Heart Trail as part of this recognition.
